How do you get those drop down boxes to show up when you hover over a topic. For instance on my renewing life website (http://www.renewinglife.org). I have these topics going across the top. And when someone hovers over the button I would like it to show a list below that they can also choose from. I just can't figure out how that is done. Anyone know?

Greetings,

There are several ways to accomplish this. The first and most obvious way is to use Javascripting. It's a little hard to do and work with of course, but potentially one of the best solutions since other effects could be incorporated into the drop-down menu.

I tried using this method once, but the resulting menu just didn't do it for me. There would either be this annoying lag when I pointed my cursor over it, or that the menu wouldn't disappear immediately after I moved my cursor away from it.

The next way is to use flash. Also an excellent solution, since a tremendous variety of effects and functions could easily be incorporated into your menu. Since there isn't much below those topics, using flash here would be perfect. I've only recently started using flash, and originally I thought making such things would be really difficult. But after a mere week playing with the thing full-time, and only starting to see some of the capabilities it has to offer, I can imagine several ways one can create such a menu using it. My very first drop-down menu didn't use flash unfortunatly, I was too scared & lazy to start using it full time back then (still kicking myself over that heh).

The last way (as far as I know anyway), is to use combinations of layers ala DHTML, and also minimal javascripting. This I think is the best solution for you, since all you'll have to do is work with is notepad to get it going. It is a little complicated, but it works really well. There's no delay when you point your mouse over your topics, and it immediately closes itself the second you pull your cursor away. Using this technique, you can also achieve mouse-over highlights, so that the whole line containing a link within the menu, would "light-up" instantly.

If you like, I can give you a demonstration link of my earlier studies with these things.

If possible, I would like to receive an example of how you did drop down boxes in DHTML.

Thanks

Oh, and most of the links within are very outdated, so don't bother clicking them heh :).

Good luck.
