Please, don't laugh at me on the following question...I am completely new to Illustrator
How do I change the canvas color? I deal with an image that is white on the background.

at first you make a bg same as the actual bg and draw above that bg

background of canvas is white
make rectangle coloured as you wish and placed over the boundering area of the canvas.
and made works on above the colored rectangle
