Hiya, im good at photoshop but have only recently started working in illustrator since i have been getting clients that want print quality work that doesnt pixelate.
Basically they have sent me a jpeg of a logo of a word which is in black text on a white background.
How do i remove the white from around the word? i can do it in photoshop but when i come to transfer it into illustrator it loses its transparency!
Ive tried everything from saving it as a psd file, png, gif, etc even when i export it from photoshop to illustrator, it loses its transparency and i keep getting a white square around the word.
I really need to place it on top of another image. so i need the background to be transparent.
I hope this makes sense! please help.
thanks in advance!!
PS im using illustrator 8

why would you import a jpg of text to work with in illustrator.
that kinda defeats the purpose of illustrators vector capabilities.
why dont you re-create the text in illustrator as a vector graphic.
...or ask the client to send you an eps file of the text to use in illustrator.

even if you manage to get the jpg "without the white" into illustrator...
...you wont be able to export the graphic from illustrator as a vector graphic.
it will still be a pixel graphic and hence...pixelated.
illustrator will not 'magically' turn your jpg into a vector 'resolution-free' graphic.

| Could one try using Streamline? Or CS2's livetrace function?

Hi, maybe you have received an answer to your question by now or maybe not. I have found that selecting the object with the white background and then getting the Transparency pallet out of the Windows menu & choosing either Multiply or Darken will, in most cases get rid of that pesky white background that Photoshop just loves to include.
There are odd times when this won't work & they always show up unexpected so just be aware there will be some instances when this won't work.

Hi, I'm not sure if this will work in older versions (I'm using CS2 for everything) - but I had to do the same thing! And I think this is how I did it... When you open Photoshop, be sure to tell it that you want a new document with a TRANSPARENT background. Then, you can do your work and get the transparency you want. Then, just save it as a regular psd file. Make sure it looks how you want it to look though - with the necessary layers invsible so it has the right background. Then, when you open your new document in Illustrator, choose the option "Place" instead of import or clicking and dragging or anything. That way when you PLACE your psd file into Illustrator you should retain the transparency that you created in photshop.
Hope this works!
