well...that will happen.
depending on the complexity of the image...
a transparent gif only contains 256 colors.
whereas a jpg contains millions of colors.
so gradients in gifs will not reproduce as well as solid colors.
you can play with the dither and color palette...
but a gif wont give you the image quality of a jpg.
photoshop transparent image export also gives the option of a png.
a png format resolves the color limitations...
but png files are not as universal as a gif with most commonly used software and browsers.

WRONG vannova!!!!
if you want transparent background. than only GIF is the available option. GIf has a limited 256 color. But you can still work on the available option in the GIF window while saving a file to get better results
The image can also saved as a PNG. The PNG format is designed to replace the GIF format. It supports up to 48-bit true color or 16-bit grayscale and it has alpha channels for variable transparency versus the simple binary transparency of the GIF format. It takes a workaround to get the alpha channels to work in IE but all other relatively recent browsers will support it.

You did not read what the original poster or I wrote. The original question was looking for a way to save the file other than using the GIF format. Your flippant response was not helpful and did not answer the question. As I stated there is a workaround for IE. I address one possible solution using CSS below.
