In a surprising move, Microsoft today announced that it would not release any new versions of its Internet Explorer browser for the Macintosh platform. What is more surprising is that Microsoft Product Manager Jessica Sommer said that "Safari is turning into a better answer for ... customers." Does anyone remember Microsoft has admitted defeat so openly before? Internet Explorer is clearly one of the best browsers around although its Mac version hasn't been updated for a long time.
It seems to me that with this move Microsoft is punishing Macintosh users, including some ex-Unix/Linux users who have recently switched to Mac, for choosing Mac OS X, which is built on top of FreeBSD, a Unix variant. It is a well known fact that Unix (especially Linux) is a serious threat to Microsoft's core business: Windows. By not updating Internet Explorer for Mac anymore, Microsoft is leaving Mac users with few browser options: Safari, Mozilla, and Opera. My personal opinion is that Internet Explorer 6, although somewhat aged, is still the best browser in comparison to the browsers mentioned above. Too bad Microsoft left IE for Mac in v5.2.

Safari appears to be the next neaty standard compliant browser..
But, the important question here is: what will all this mean for... "customers", "developers", "designers"....??
BTW, AOL is abandoning Netscape users too. It´s really important to notice, "Billy" is winning the monopoly and kicking a$$e$ very hard... and there´s even no competitors running...
What will it mean for us(ers)?

I don't think IE is the best browser around. I think Mozilla Firefox is the best. It has some amazing new features and it works much faster. Someone had written a review about is.. http://www.mercola.com/2003/dec/24/christmas.htm
I use it now, and it works like a charm. Only one thing, you cannot copy images like in IE, but alternative you can drag images into programs like Photoshop. That is the only thing. And as a webdesigner you finaly should always test your websites in IE.

Oh, I just saw that they have a VERY simple to install add-on for copying images to your clipboard. I just downloaded it from there site http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/. Although I have a Windows machine, Mozilla Firefox is my standard browser. Because it really works better.
