After dispute with my brother about how I should lay my current website out, we have decided to ask designers and design critics (meaning you) what your preffered monitor resolution is.
The argument: I made the website designed for 1024 x 768 optimization, and viewing in a lower res. will force horizontal scrollbars to appear (at least in his AOL browser anyway). He thinks I should make it so this does not occur.

First of all, although I use 1280x1024, all my browser windows are 800xsomething pixels big. I do this not only because I don't like to read really long lines on sites that use dynamic-width (aka fluid) layouts, but because I want to see how a site looks in a 800 pixel wide browser window since it lets me see how a site is intended to look.
Also, I think the poll results would be skewed toward the high resolutions because web designers/developers tend to use big screens and high resolutions. If your intended audience is more mainstream, then you might find the following statistics interesting:
http://www.onestat.com/html/aboutus_pressbox14.html
Added: I use a tiny utility called Sizer to quickly resize my windows.

I actually prefer 1152 x 870 which is not on the list.
I would also be interested in seeing what platform designers prefer (Mac or PC).

stelzner,
I've added your favorite resolution to the poll. In the meantime, feel free to post your own mac vs pc poll

(yeah, my very first post!)
Personally, I use 1024*768 when I browse the web, but I design for at least 800*600. My old but trusty notebook has a 15" screen, and I use 800*600 for that one.
Yes, it does get kind of annoying when I read very long lines of text online, but I like to have everything maximized so I wouldn't accidentally click on or close the wrong windows.

Thanks to all for your own input in the poll, especially to those who have stated why/why not.
Aycan,
Thanks for pointing out Sizer - it will be of good use for further designs/projects - and the OneStat article is of interest and I have taken into consideration all the statistics and statements that they have made also.
Stelzner,
I preffer to design on a Mac, although I do not have easy access to one apart from college, so I guess I would have to vote PC (running Linux).
Thanks again,
zephyr

I voted the other day but didn't have time to add my comment.
IMHO, 800 x 600 is extremely important. Anything larger and you run the large risk of losing anyone who has to scroll sideways. I know I take a pass on any site that shows up that way(even though there is a growing trend in that direction).
The bigger and wider screens may have arrived ... but, most people have at least one system, notebook, laptop with a small(er) screen.
In fact, I'm a fan of the smaller screens. I don't care for anything that begins to resemble a television.

Well, I'd use all res ranges with 800x600 the minimum.
What I mean by this is to use a liquid layout so that It expands and contracts web pages. For example, WowBB uses a liquid layout. I'm not sure wha its minium res is prob 600 px width.
It may be a bit easier since it's about 80% ASP or PHP, and that Graphic orientated sites, or even flash sites for that matter, but your viewers would enjoy it much better - not to mention the hooo rahs you get with its cross browser compatibilty.

First of all, I think you shoud re-state the question ... I think you should ask a. what resolution we normally use and b. what resolution we design (or surf the net) for. I think there´s a big differencce between the two.
You see, I use twin 21" monitors at 12800x1024 each, yet I design for 1024x768 or 800x600 (and when I´m browsing, my browser windows are somewhere in between).
But it all comes down to what your intended audience is going to be... if it´s going to be a site geared towards say, designers, make your design at least 1024x768; if the audience is going to be young(ish) people, I say go for 1024, too, as they likely have a nice monitor and good eyesight.
Besides the above, you also have to consider the evolution of computers... more and more people are starting to use (finally) resolutions above 800x600; so if your audience is going to be "mainstream" (meaning all user groups), I´d say make a 1024x768 design that holds up when viewed at 800x600.

I read an official poll somewhere that 60% of people uses 800x600 resolution. 1024x768 would be the next largest group. I would not neglect the 800x600 crowd. Hope this helps.

I was just wondering if any of you know of program that would allow a monitor (samtron SC-428 pl) to go more than 800 x 600. I have a couple of games that only work if you have the resolution at 1024 x 768. I am running windows XP pro with a Hercules Kyro II 64MB AGP video card, which is able to run higher than 800 x 600. Your help would be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks

Simply never design a website that requires over 760 width.
That's more than enough res for a great site, you'll never exclude a group.
End of story.
What you're res is is irrelevant. You build sites for users!

And to take in account:
Shortsighted people will not have a very interesting experience above 800x600... no need to explain why... In fact, not-shortsighted employees will become blind soon....

800x600 as anything higher I cant see very well.. Also my websites layout is 800x600.
The only problem is probably how every now and then a program or something goes of the screen and you cant see some buttons etc.
