Review:
With ScanFont, you can easily convert old bitmap fonts, signatures, logos or just any line drawing including new font designs drawn on paper to TrueType or Type 1 fonts. Before conversion you can clean scanned images with bitmap editing tools or image filters if necessary, but ScanFont does a really good job to identify individual characters as long as they don't overlap.
You can assign a name to each character just by entering a string such as 'ABCDE'. Each letter in the string will be used to name traced characters from left to right. This feature makes the conversion process almost automatic. Once the names assigned pressing the Insert key inserts characters to the correct positions in the font. If you wish to further edit individual characters, you can use the vector editing tools to do that. ScanFont supports auto kerning and hinting, but you can manually edit kernings as well.
ScanFont is actually not limited to scanned images; you don't really need a scanner to convert bitmaps into fonts. If you are comfortable drawing with a mouse or a graphic tablet, you can always import your 100% digital drawings to ScanFont for conversion. See related links for an excellent article written by Yuri Yarmola, head of the original programming group that created the FontLab products to learn how to make new fonts from existing fonts in minutes by using Adobe Photoshop and ScanFont.
Note: Mac version of ScanFont requires FontLab or TypeTool to run.
