Review:
Xara3D is a powerful 3-D text and button generator that can turn any text or Windows metafile into 3-D in no time. Xara3D allows you to modify the properties of any text selection including font, size, alignment, line spacing, tracking, and kerning. If you make line spacing small enough you can merge lines and end up with interesting effects. This is true for tracking (overall spacing between characters) too. There are 25 bevel types and 8 ways of animation (rotate, swing, pulsate, ripple, fade, step, typewriter, and pulse). Animations can be saved in GIF, AVI or SWF (Flash) formats. You can also create screensavers from your animations.
The full version comes with a free copy of Xara Webster 2, a vector-based drawing program that can be used not only to create vector drawings but also to export those drawings to Xara3D for 2D-to-3D conversion. The full version also has 800 textures, 50 TrueType fonts, and 500 example images.
In addition to the above one of the most interesting features is that you can import outline files created in Xara X into Xara3D and turn this simple tool into a powerful 3D rendering engine...at least for the beginner. Impressive results can be achieved with just a few clicks, however there are of course limitations. I found that small images like 10x10 pixel gifs created in Xara 3D did not have the same clean crispness as the same image created in Photoshop or Illustrator. Overall, I think the simplicity of use and stunning results even a complete beginner can achieve with this tool are highly commendable...I used it for my very first page and I still use it today, many years later.
