Designer's words: Specializing in graphical user interface and three-dimensional data displays.
Noel Rubin orchestrates space, time, images, and information to create powerful multi-layered communications - messages that convey both meaning and mythos.
Our comments: Noel Rubin is the person who created the screen graphics of Anakin's Pod Racer in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. He was also responsible for some of the special effects used in Space Cowboys, and for the visual designs of several Microsoft projects including the Urban Assault game. In an interview with 3D Festival, Rubin said that even for fictional user interfaces, he tries to justify the purpose of every element of the interface. This attitude is clearly evident in his portfolio site's design. First of all, the design fits in a 640x480 window. Flash is used where it is necessary: to create a unique, animated interface with fast response times. As a result, the back and forward buttons can be used across sections because the design is part HTML part Flash. The interface is very intuitive, but is rendered in black and white unlike Rubin's previous bright, colorful designs. To navigate, mouse-over or click on the site's title, and a 3D wireframe cube that contains smaller cubes will appear. Click the smaller cubes to choose sections and sub sections. The interface of the portfolio browser is also worth mentioning. Thumbnails of the entries are displayed vertically like a film strip. An entry can either be a folder that contains more entries or be the final image. This concept works wonderfully well because of its simplicity. One last word: Don't forget to watch the demo reel!
