Our comments: The online photography portfolio of Silvestro Rugolo can be viewable in HTML and Flash formats. While both versions have some common features, they are in fact quite different. The HTML version is very graphic-intensive, and the thumbnails seem to be placed as if they are in a photo album or a sticker book. The Flash version is clean as compared to the somewhat messy HTML version. You can either click on the numbers that correspond to pictures on film or turn on the "miniatures": the thumbnail browser. On the downside, the stock sound loops and and sound effects are unfortunately nothing but a nuisance.
I think this site is trying to be coherent with a mood. It is casual but is also inviting the visitors to share a point of view. and that's always something deep and worthy.
Graphics are just amaizingly beautiful, and I think the color combination is perfect, again, with the mood.
Perhaps the color combination is the reason why somebody said that it looks like 2advanced, but I think, like many others, that it has nothing to do with it.
Ok, navigation in lite version is not quite good, but we cannot think that this site's visitors are stupid. I think, sometimes, it's cool when somebody challenge our "professional visitor's" skills.
And, the flash version.... is incredible. What's the point in saying that flash is the devil? I think this site shows us how subtile could flash be... if we try. And I don't agree about the sound, either... the sound is peaceful, and it's coherent, again, with the mood of the entire site.
I fully agree with Dima.
For the lite version, the design style is "somewhat" messy, but it is fresh and it seems to be a wanted effect. I can't find any difficulties in this version and moreover, NO FLASH is used (Maybe Anenga was watching many websites at the same time...).
I liked the use of similar but different design styles in the two version.
The Flash version is delicate and clean and considering that it is his first experience...
...anyway, sounds are not as good as the rest.
From a technical standpoint, ASP (right click-properties shows ASP technology), Flash, Javascript are used. Silvestro affirms in the about section that XML is used to describe collections for "ease of update". If so, update can be done using just XML and image files, once for both versions.
I know how much work is needed to provide a clean design while managing a lot of contents and so I can just say: nice work!
Don't see anything to do with 2advanced.com - I don't know why xcuse-me thinks that there is somethinng "borrowed" from there. I liked the site much as interesting navigation. I also wonder why Anenga complains about navigation troubles - this is not a Yahoo!-style site. There is a point on making specific and even strange looking navigation systems. I'd rather see odd and weird navigation rather than dull sites that do nothing but waste server bandwidth. I like this site.
This website is a usability nightmare. Jakob Nielsen would shoot himself.
The usage of Flash technology on this website is not used carefuly. For the Lite Version, it uses a horrible design technique called "Mystery Meat Navigation" (WebpagesThatSuck.com). More tech-savvy users may be able to browse around more easily, but the popular example of "My Mom" would be highly confused.
To start it off, it pops up in a new window (pop-ups = annoying). Then it uses Flash (lite versions shouldn't use flash!). Upside down text? My God! Pass the Advil!
The Flash version looks a little better, and the navigation is a little better... but has even worse features than the lite version. For one thing, it takes forever to load any section, even an image! It takes so long to "set-up" a section/page that I bet end users will just give up and close the window rather than continuly getting lost in this annoying interface.
Instead, I would of used simple XHTML/PHP with a gallery script etc. You can do alot with HTML. You don't need Flash.
Better luck next time.
Editor's note: The lite version does not use Flash.
