Designer's words: In addition to information and practical details about the show in six languages, visitors to the site are introduced to the world in which the two artists lived through an interactive Van Gogh & Gauguin experience. Portrayals of typical scenes from their turbulent friendship are based on selections from Van Gogh and Gauguin's letters: their passion for painting, their quarrels and their personal ideals and concerns. A representative selection of paintings from the exhibition also provides an insight into the way the two artists worked and the oeuvre they produced.
The story is told in a linear sequence based around four themes: Van Gogh in Arles, Gauguin's arrival in the southern French town, their collaboration and Gauguin's departure following the dramatic quarrel in which Van Gogh cut off part of his ear. Within this linear structure visitors are able to experience their own version of the story in visuals, animations and sound. A rising and setting sun serves as navigational metaphor. This construction ensures that every visit to the site is different, encouraging visitors to return to savour more of the experience.
Our comments: The Van Gogh & Gauguin web site provides information about the Van Gogh & Gauguin exhibition that would take place in the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam between February 9th and June 2nd 2002, and it goes beyond that by telling the story of their uneasy friendship with an emotional Flash presentation. Although a bit longwinded and linear, the presentation is impressive in its interactive portrayal of the events that took place between the two masters. Non-flash sections of the site deserves attention as well because of the unique color bands and the intuitive menu system used.
